Categories
A. Rock Climbing and Mountaineering: Rex Gibson Memorial Trophy
Good climbing technique preferred. Resting parties are not considered climbing subjects.
B. Snow and Ice Climbing: Frank Hollingworth Memorial Tray
Same criteria as class A.
C. Skiing: Edmonton Section Ski Photo Trophy
Pictures should include people on skis. Resting parties are not considered skiing subjects.
D. Alpine Association - Summer: Gladys Harley Memorial Trophy
Any aspect of alpine scenery taken during the summer months.
E. Alpine Association - Winter: George Jones Trophy
Any aspect of alpine scenery taken during the winter months.
F. Mountain Flora: Pat Payne Memorial Shield
G. Mountain Fauna: Ralph Forster Trophy
H. Helen Burns Cup: A selection of digital photos, from 3 to 6 in number, presented on one digital page. They should follow a theme, Photos will be judged for interest to the Edmonton section, composition, exposure definition, and story-telling ability. Prints will be accepted – please mount all images on one page/poster.
I. Mountain Humour: Trophy is a wooden model
J. Alpine Experimental: Harry Wohlfarth painting
If you have a slide that is photographically unusual, artistic, or far-out, please submit it. The criteria for this category are experimental too. Please note – digitally altered images must be entered in category O.
K. Black and White Print: Any photos in a mountain setting. Submissions may be print, digital, or slide.
L. Off of Auto: Any photos in a mountain setting taken using manual settings. You must attach FStop, shutter speed and lense type for each photo submitted.
M. Smith, Carlson, Smith Award: Presented for the slide that best shows people in a mountain setting, with an emphasis on capturing the spirit of mountaineering.
N. Kids in the Mountains: Subjects should be 14 years of age or less (at time of picture). Judging will be based on composition, technical merit, title, and most of all, youthful spirit.
O. Digital Unlimited: This is the category for digitally altered/enhanced images. Use your creativity and your sense of humour.

Photo Contest Rules
1. Entries not following the Contest Rules will not be considered for judging.
2. Entries must be received by our deadline of November 17, 2009.
3. Entries are to be slides or digital images which are submitted in jpg format on a CD. Prints are only accepted in categories H and K. Email submissions will not be accepted: instead, please follow the submission guidelines for digital photos.
4. Entries are to be marked with the Category letter (followed by a space), title (followed by a space) and owner's initials e.g., D Mountain Beauty TL.jpg.
5. Entries must have been taken by a paid up member of the Edmonton Section.
6. Entries must have been taken within the last 2 years.
7. Entries must not have won a prize or honourable mention in a previous Edmonton Section competition.
8. No more than three photos may be entered, per member, in each class. Enter as many classes as you like.
9. Pictures from any alpine area in the world may be entered.
10. Electronic photos, from scanned photos or taken directly, may be submitted in lieu of slides; however, they must be in a presentation-ready format such jpg. Please also review rule #10: Digital Images.
11. For digital images: contect (compositional) alternation is not acceptable; cropping is permitted; tonal or colour corrections are acceptable, including black and white coverstions.
12. Slides and photos will be presented in the orientation/position they are received in.

Photo Submission Instructions

Please name your digital photo files using the file-naming scheme as outlined in the rules section. Emailed photos will not be accepted, as the size and volume has crashed our email servers in past years. Digital photos can be submitted in any one of the following methods listed below.


  • Submit electronically, via FTP

    FTP site access information:

    • Protocol type: FTP (we don't use SFTP, or FTPS, or FTPES)
    • Hostname: alpineclub-edm.org
    • Port#: 21
    • Username: photosubmit.alpineclub-edm.org
    • Password: luv4mountain

    Uploading instructions:
    • Connect to our FTP site using the configuration information listed above.
    • Upon connecting, there will be one folder for each category listed in the 'Catgories' section.
    • Upload your photo into the appropriate folder that corresponds to your photo's category.
    • Please do not interfere with any other files submitted.
      Within each category, we will backup and remove all submitted photos on a daily basis. Until each backup occurs, we ask for your assistance to ensure the integrity and non-interference of any photos that have already been submitted into each category.


    Deadline for submissions via FTP will be Tuesday November 18, 2008, 7:00pm (MT). FTP access will be removed after this time.

    Using a 'FTP client' program is the prefered technique to upload photos. Some recommended examples are:

    Please report any problems with this FTP access to the webmaster. Note that we are unable to offer technical assistance with your FTP software.


  • Submit manually, on CD, at ACC general meetings

    Photos can be submitted on a CD at the ACC general meeting on November 17th.

    Please note that this is the last day of our deadline for submissions.
