Summer Camp 2008
Wates-Gibson Hut, Tonquin Valley, Jasper
August 17-24

This year’s camp will be in Jasper National Park in the very scenic Tonquin valley. This is the best all round back country hut in the park for both hiking and general mountaineering. The Edmonton section has a long history of association with this hut and has put a lot into it over the years. It is a trip you need to make in the summer and see how different it is from the winter. This trip is being run in latter part of the summer to avoid the very hottest of the summer days and by this date the bugs will all be gone so we can enjoy the valleys and hut.

The budget for the camp has been set and the cost will be $500 for a week. This covers the cost of transporting food and supplies, common gear, hut fees, and cook. Meals included are breakfast, packed lunch, afternoon soup and tea, and dinner. Additional personnel items can be carried in by the porters at a cost by weight . This year we have Loree Dokimenko cooking for us, she comes with a high recommendation from the national. I am confident that we will feast every day.

Activities at the camp will be climbing, scrambling, hiking, photography and relaxing. For further information or to reserve a spot contact:

Everest: A Climb for Peace
Date: April 3 2008 – 7:30pm (limited seating so come early)

Venue: Metro Cinema – Edmonton

Directed by Lance Trumbull – 63 minutes

Narrated by Orlando Bloom and hailed as a "tremendous achievement" by the Dalai Lama. Everest: A Climb for Peace is not just a typical Everest film, but a socially relevant documentary about peace, war, and the human spirit - an inspirational film, which also has some of the most incredible Everest footage ever shot, including a dramatic rescue from near the summit of Everest.

Filmed on location in Nepal, Tibet, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, U.A.E, and the United States, the film chronicles the spectacular journey of 9 'peace climbers' from different faiths and cultures as they climb to the summit of the tallest mountain in the world.

This screening is sponsored by Solution 105 Consulting Limited.

All proceeds and donations from this screening will go to Himalayan Health and Hospitals Project – a not for profit community group fundraising for health projects in remote Western Nepal.

Summer in the Mountains
Summer in the Mountains will begin on Thursday April 3rd. We will have 5 classroom sessions held on the U of A campus (room TBA), from 7-9pm on 5 consecutive Thursday evenings. There will also be two skills weekends. These weekends are tentatively May 9-10 and May 24-25. Cost of the course will be $50 which covers the classroom fees plus costs incurred on the skills weekends (this will include at minimum: a harness, 2 locking carabiners, some prussik cords as well as rental of a helmet and ice axe if you don’t own them). Topics covered will include temperature regulation in the backcountry, clothing systems, gear (stoves, tents, sleeping bags as well as technical climbing gear), travel on snow, crevasse rescue, and travel on rock. This course is meant as an introduction to the skills you will need to travel in the mountains in summer!

If you are interested in participating, please contact me at mountaintbone@hotmail.com or at 493-8198 to get your name on our list. This course does usually fill up – we are not limited for spots in the classroom, however we are for the skills weekends.

If you have already taken the Summer in the Mountains course, please consider participating in the Crevasse Rescue refresher weekend. This will be held on May 9-10 and is a review of crevasse rescue and ice axe self arrest. It is also A LOT of fun – there is a Luau theme with prizes for costumes, and great food. The contact for that trip is safety@alpineclub-edm.org and it is run by Chris Wood and Edwina Podemski. Highly recommended!

Cheers,
Tanya Binette

Icefall Lodge Ski Camp
April 5-12 2008

The Calgary Section is opening up its Icefall Lodge Ski Camp to all Alpine Club members. Icefall Lodge is a new area located in a spectacular setting just west of the continental divide, about halfway between the Campbell Icefields and Mount Alexandra, location of the 2007 GMC. The lodge is located at treeline with access to over 200 square km of skiing terrain including glaciers, summits, bowls, and trees. The longest run is almost 7,000 vertical feet! For those interested in ski mountaineering, there are five 11,000 ft ski summits! The ACC selected Icefall Lodge for its 2008 North Face Winter Leadership Training Course. Further details are on the Calgary Section trip calendar at http://acccalgaryc.web150.discountasp.net/events/details.asp?eventid=42.

If you want to sign up, or for further information, please send an email to Mike Wingham at mwingham@gmail.com.

Adamants Group Summer Camp
This summer, the Edmonton Section and the Rocky Mountain Section are presenting a joint mountaineering camp in the Gothics group. Ten people from each section will attend. The camp will be based out of the luxurious Fairy Meadows Hut. The dates are Aug 3-10. For more information visit www3.telus.net/tjellard/Adamants_Camp.htm.

Private Adamants Group Options
Dear climbing friends,

As you can see from the Adamants Group Summer Camp link, the Rocky Mtn. Section of the ACC would like to run a climbing camp jointly with the Edmonton Section at Fairy Meadow, August 3-10, 2008. I myself would like to expand on this concept in the following ways, and would like to interest one or more persons in joining me for the following endeavours (different persons can participate in different phases to be outlined):

1. Hike in to Fairy Meadow from Roger’s Pass. Selkirks North gives a minimum time of 5 days for this, so one should allow at least a week (prior to the 3rd) for bad weather and other exigiencies. En route, one could climb Sir Sandford, and scout out a location for the high camp (see below).

2. On the 3rd, one could meet the helicopter at Fairy Meadow and ride it, along with lots of extra food, tents, climbing gear etc. to the aforementioned high camp, probably on the upper Adamant Glacier, which would afford very short approaches to numerous moderate classic climbs in the central part of the massif. If anyone were so inclined, this would permit the logistics of attempting some of the more serious 5.10 A3 type of face climbs in the area (I can probably access the needed gear). During bad weather, one could retreat to Great Cairn for a break from tent life.

3. After a week or so at high camp, one could carry everything down to Fairy Meadow and spend a few more days there, eating up the remaining food and doing those climbs better done from that base. Finally, one could carry everything down Swan Creek and drive out.

As you can see, participation in all three phases of this plan would involve a good three weeks. I have yet to contact the helicopter people re prices etc. But really, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to undertake this rarely-attempted approach and arrive to full fleshpots at the destination, with gear and support for extensive climbing, which would be the pot of gold at the end of the slog, making it doubly worthwhile.

To discuss this further, contact Reinhard at 439 6822 or grafberg@eccsociety.com.

Drive to California
I will be driving to California this summer for some climbing in Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra. Leaving mid-June, returning mid-July (and possibly later). Would like to team up with someone to share the driving and, hopefully, the climbing. Contact Reinhard at (780) 439 6822 or grafberg@eccsociety.com.
